Adapted from Terry Hershey’s book This is the Life.

I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children”

Matthew 11:25

A class of seven year olds were given the assignment to name the seven wonders of the world and then share them with the class. As you can imagine, students shouted out wonders like “The Pyramids,” “Yellowstone National Park,” the “Amazon River,” and “Niagara Falls”. The teacher was very pleased – however, she noticed one little girl was silent. When asked to share her list, the little girl hesitantly said:

“I don’t think I understand the assignment. I don’t have any of the right answers.”

The teacher encouraged her to share anyway, and said the rest of the class would help if she needed it.

“OK,” says the little girl. “I think the seven wonders of the world are to see, to hear, to taste, to smell, to love, and to belong.”

In our Western way of looking at things, we tend to think that living in the present moment and noticing the little things distracts from “real life.” We easily get sucked into a chain reaction of overwork->overstimulation->overcompensation->overkill. Not really news is it?

So, how can you enjoy the present moment? Savor the life you have? Baby steps. Lean into God’s love today. As a matter of fact, you could even start to savor life in this exact moment! Mary Oliver has some excellent advice for us: “Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.”
